Judge Recuses Himself From Taser Case
(Winnfield, LA) -- State District Judge Jacque Derr, who was assigned to preside over the case of a Winnfield police officer accused of using a Taser to kill a Winn Parish man, has recused himself. Derr, who was sworn in as Eighth Judicial District Judge on January 1st, says he was "associated" with the defendant, Officer Scott Nugent, on several occasions. Nugent is charged with manslaughter and malfeasance after being accused of shocking Barron Pikes nine times with a 50-thousand-volt Taser within a period of 14 minutes. Prosecutors say the incident took place while Pikes was handcuffed and in police custody following his arrest on drug charges in January 2008. Friday, January 09, 2009 8:31 AM
