Two Streetcars Collide
Two of those famed New Orleans' streetcars that travel Canal Street did a rare thing Monday. They collided head-on. Twenty-three people, including the operators of both vehicles, suffered minor injuries. How the streetcars heading in opposite directions came to be on the same track remains under investigation. A switching system at the location which allows a car to be transferred to the other track is being checked for signs of tampering. Streetcar service on Canal and St. Charles Avenue was suspended for two-hours following the accident.

Shooting Motive Still Being Sought
While investigators still don't know why 23-year-old Latina Williams opened fire at a vocational college in Baton Rouge last Friday, they have learned more about her background. Williams shot and killed two female students as they sat at their desks in a second-floor classroom of Louisiana Technical College and then fatally shot herself with a 357-revolver she had purchased, along with a box of ammunition, the day before at a New Orleans pawn shop. Police Sergeant Don Kelly says Williams had had little contact with her family in Mississippi over the past two-years, was apparently living out of her car and had displayed recent signs of paranoia. Kelly says detectives believe Williams called a crisis counselor the day of the shootings indicating she planned to take her own life.

His attorney says he was frustrated when he heard about the arrest, especially after all the work he and Purvis' mother, had done to keep him out of the spotlight by moving him out of state to live with his uncle. The attorney describes the "fight" as a ``little push and shove'' incident and no punches were thrown.
