Millions Going To Farmers Flooding Their Fields
The government is doling out $20-million to farmers in eight states, including Louisiana, to create habitats for migratory birds whose usual Gulf wintering spots may be fouled by the massive BP oil spill.

Hurricane Drill Is Happening
In New Orleans today - the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will prepare for a hurricane as if it were real. The rehearsal is to improve coordination. The response teams will face simulated emergencies to practice their reactions to unforeseen crises and refine their response times. Part of exercise involves operating the flood gates and pumps at three outfall canals.

Black Bears Are Making a Comeback
Field experts say the Louisiana black bear, which has been on the U.S. threatened species list since the early 1990's, is making a comeback. Paul Davidson is director of the Black Bear Conservation Commission says there are now at least 500 black bears in the state perhaps as many as 1,000. He says it's hoped the Louisiana black bear will be taken off the threatened species list in the next five years. Thursday, April 17, 2008 4:47 AM

Senate Agrees With Regional Crisis Centers

House Moves To Stiffen Penalties For Those That Intimidate Witnesses
Members of the House approved a bill that stiffens penalties harshly on those that intimidate a witness to a crime. New Orleans Representative Walt Leger the 3rd sponsored the bill in response to numerous cases in his city's criminal court that have fallen apart because witneses were afraid to testify. Landreneau Confirmation Could Be Open To Public
It's not the usual state of affairs--but a confirmation hearing for Louisiana National Guard commander Bennett Landreneau could be open to the public. Senate and Governmental Affairs Committee chairman Robert Kostelka says that's what General Landreneau has requested. A report was put together by other generals at Governor Jindal's request, and it recommended AGAINST re-appointing Landreneau. The report was virtually ignored by the governor. Kostelka says the committee will have to tread carefully to avoid stepping on anyone's toes. Whether the confirmation hearing is open, or held in executive session, Kostelka says he expects more than a few verbal shots will be fired.
