Student Won't Have To Cut Braid To Stay In School
(New Orleans, LA) -- A five-year-old Louisiana boy won't have to cut his hair to stay in school. Curtis Harjo is a Native American who, in conforming to his religion, wears a single neat braid of hair down his back. But, his mother was told by St. Tammany Parish school officials that her son would have to cut the braid to comply with the district's dress code requiring boys to have short hair, or wear his braid in a bun. The parents rejected both options and with the assistance of the ACLU of Louisiana and the Native American Rights Fund in Boulder, Colorado were able to convince Superintendent Gayle Sloan to reverse her previous decision. The Harjo's religion embraces a belief that hair should not be cut except as a symbol of mourning following the death of a loved one. Thursday, November 20, 2008 7:42 AM
