New Record For Gas
It's another record setting day for gas prices in Louisiana. Triple-A reports the statewide average price of regular hit four-dollars a gallon today, a new record high. The price is a dollar-nine higher than a year ago and eleven-cents lower than the current nationwide average. Also in Louisiana, diesel is at a new record high of just over four-74 a gallon, compared to two-83 a year ago. Checking some of the metro areas, regular is averaging three-98 in Baton Rouge, four-dollars-two-cents in Lafayette and just a hair below four-dollars in New Orleans.

Gallot Says No To A Race
Mentioned weeks ago as a possible challenger for incumbent Republican District 5 Congressman Rodney Alexander, Ruston Representative Rick Gallot says he will NOT enter that race. Gallot says he was approached by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and he gave the matter serious thought. Gallot is chairman of the state House & Governmental Affairs Committee. He says he had been focused on that role, when Democrats asked him about challenging his long-time friend, Alexander. Alexander was a Democrat until 2004, and a close friend of Gallot's. Gallot says he's relieved now that he's made his final decision to NOT enter the race.

New Bug Is Bugging Citrus
It's a tiny bug, but it could mean the end of a 20-million dollar a year business in Louisiana. It's called the Asian citrus psyllid and Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says now it's been found in five southeast Louisiana parishes--the latest being Lafourche Parish. Also under quarantine are Orleans, Jefferson, Plaquemines and St. Charles. Strain says the bugs, which attach to the underside of leaves, resemble citrus scale. Strain says Louisiana's 420 million dollar a year citrus industry is in jeopardy because of the bug, because it can infect trees with the bacteria that causes the fatal citrus greening disease.

Katrina Poll Results
Nearly three years after Hurricane Katrina, a recent poll of 300 people conducted by telephone indicates 59-percent of those surveyed are satisfied with life in the still recovering city. The level of satisfaction is almost identical to results found in a pre-Katrina 2005 survey. However, Dr. Robert Sims, who directed the most recent survey, says Mayor Ray Nagin pulled only an eleven-percent approval rate among white residents. Nagin's approval rating among blacks was only 49-percent.
Meanwhile in other Katrina-related news, the House Government Reform Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing later today on
formaldehyde levels in FEMA trailers sent to hurricane victims along the Gulf Coast. The hearing follows media reports that the trailers' manufacturers were aware of dangerously high levels of formaldehyde and took no action to correct the problem.
