The government is doling out $20-million to farmers in eight states, including Louisiana, to create habitats for migratory birds whose usual Gulf wintering spots may be fouled by the massive BP oil spill.

GPS The Best Gift for a Morgan City Man A Morgan City man is grateful today his cell phone had GPS capability, as state troopers and St. Martin Parish authorities used it to find him. 29-year-old Charles Lodrigue called his mom this weekend, to say he'd run his car into a utility pole and was injured--and lost in the woods. State police worked with AT&T for 7 hours to track him down--500 yards from the road, in a creek bed.

Brave Neighbors Save Elderly Baton Rouge Woman From Fire An elderly Baton Rouge woman was saved from her burning home by some brave neighbors Sunday. 80-year-old Janie Campbell is a stroke victim, with limited mobility. The fire started with her car in the carport and spread to the house. About five neighbor men battered down her door and pulled her from the house before firefighters could arrive. She is uninjured.

Shreveport Police Officer Injured in Shooting Authorities say a Shreveport police officer was injured and the motorist he pulled over suffered a gunshot wound yesterday following a traffic stop. Police spokesman Corporal Bill Goodin said the unidentified officer stopped the motorist who was driving erratically early yesterday morning. As officers were questioning the driver, the unidentified motorist put the car in reverse, hitting one of the officers. The police officer was able to fire his weapon at the driver. Both the policeman and suspect did not suffer life threating injuries.

Federal Prosecutors Want to Start Outgoing Congressman Jefferson's Trial In a brief filed this week, federal prosecutors are asking a Virginia appeals court to permit no further delays in starting Congressman Bill Jefferson's bribery trial. Jefferson's lawyers are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to throw out 14 of the 16 counts. Loyola law professor Dane Ciolino says Jefferson's re-election loss shouldn't affect this. Ciolino says he doubts we've seen the end of delaying tactics by Jefferson's attorney.

Boy Shot in New Orleans New Orleans Police are seeking the armed men who opened fire on a car with a 3-year-old boy inside last night; hitting the child twice. The boy was with his grandmother, when she was attempting to back up on a city street. The men surrounded the car and then began shooting. The boy is going to be OK. The men are being sought by the cops. Motive for the shooting is anyone's guess.
