Millions Going To Farmers Flooding Their Fields
The government is doling out $20-million to farmers in eight states, including Louisiana, to create habitats for migratory birds whose usual Gulf wintering spots may be fouled by the massive BP oil spill.

Group Wants Katrina Anniversary Declared A State Holiday
In New Orleans, a group of folks is trying to press lawmakers into designating the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina an annual state holiday and a holy day. Upenta Glover with the Katrina Commemoration Foundation says that what happened on August 29th, 2005 was unprecedented in the U.S. and deserves to be recognized as such. Friday marks the third anniversary of Katrina's landfall on the Gulf Coast, a storm that claimed some 16-hundred lives and destroyed or heavily damaged hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in south Louisiana and Mississippi. Shreveport-Bossier Don's Seafood & Steakhouse Calls It Quits After 40 years in business in the Shreveport-Bossier area, Don's Seafood & Steakhouse has closed it's doors for good because of increased competition. This restaurant is not the same family which owns Don's Seafood and Steakhouse in downtown Lafayette, nor is the Shreveport-Bossier based restaurant related to Don's Seafood Hut - also a family-owned business, but has with other business partners on board. Ouachita Truancy Ouachita Parish students have only been in school for a week, but officials are already cracking down on truants. Lorrie Morris with the 4th Judicial District's Families in Need of Services says they'll be using a recently enacted state law that holds parents responsible for kids' truancy or tardies. Morris says most parents are cooperative when told their kids are ditching school. Morris says 25 percent of Ouachita Parish students were truant over the past two years.
