"Mega-fund" Money Approved for Pilgrim's Pride

The state Senate Finance Committee approves a proposal to allow the
state to tap into an economic development fund to help keep a
chicken processing plant in Union Parish in operation. Governor
Jindal says thousands of jobs are at stake.

The proposed legislation allows the state to use 50-million dollars
from the economic development "mega-fund" toward the purchase of the
Pilgrim's Pride plant in Farmerville. The state and Foster Farms
are negotiating to buy the plant. The bill now goes to the full
Senate.

Man Arrested For Stealing From Area Farmers

A 49-year-old Mansura man is busted for allegedly stealing diesel
fuel, fuel storage tanks and tires from several area farmers.
Avoyelles Parish deputies say Sherman Jacobs was booked on two
counts of felony theft, and is currently in jail, pending bond.

Motorcyclist Killed In Crash

A 30-year-old Baker man was killed when a car crossed the centerline
and hit his motorcycle head-on. State Police say Daniel Edelen was
pronounced dead at the scene. 19-year-old Quang Nguyen was cited for
careless operation. Further charges may be coming, pending an
investigation.

Albermarle Profits Dropping

Baton Rouge-based Albemarle Corporation reports its first-quarter
profits have dropped by over 50-percent. The specialty chemicals
maker says demand for its products have just dried up.

Arrow Law

The city of Monroe is considering an ordinance making it illegal to
shoot an arrow within city limits.  Apparently at least one
resident has had stray arrows fly through her windows--on two
occasions. If approved, one could get a $500 fine for playing Robin
Hood in city limits.
