Good News From Medical Program
Officials at the LSU Health Sciences Center say more of its senior medical students have chosen to remain in Louisiana. Doctor Steve Nelson is the dean of the LSU HSC School of Medicine says nearly 97 percent of the LSU Health Science Center's graduating students were able to get matched to their first choice in post-graduate medical training. Doctor Nelson says that figure is significant. He says years ago, the rate ot student retention in the LSUHSC program was roughly 70 percent, but destruction of New Orleans' Charity Hospital resulting from Hurricane Katrina reduced that number severely. Nelson says the graduate program is rebounding, and the new university hospital in New Orleans will help the program remain competitive. Monday, March 24, 2008 5:02 AM
