Millions Going To Farmers Flooding Their Fields
The government is doling out $20-million to farmers in eight states, including Louisiana, to create habitats for migratory birds whose usual Gulf wintering spots may be fouled by the massive BP oil spill.

Consumer Confidence At 26 Year Low
Consumer confidence is at a 26 year low. The Reuters-University of Michigan sentiment index dropped almost seven points in one month. The blue mood is the result of several factors. The economy has lost almost a quarter-million jobs this year, and gasoline is up 17-percent. Consumers are also being pinched by rising prices. An economist told Bloomberg, quote, "Consumers are feeling the pinch, not only from the labor market, but also from prices. There's a squeeze on incomes from two sides." Jazz Fest Hits NO
It's a weekend of festivals. The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival kicks off this morning. Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel are among the big names. Others include Jimmy Buffett, Tim McGraw, Santana, Sheryl Crow, Robert Plant and the return of the Neville Brothers. In all there are more than four-thousand musicians, cooks and crafts people performing feeding and selling goods to the crowds. This year is the first year since Katrina that organizers are offering a full seven day line-up.

Last Day Of Early Voting
Saturday is the last day of early voting for the congressional runoff to replace now-Governor Bobby Jindal on Capitol Hill. Voters across Southeast Louisiana can cast early ballots at their registrar of voters offices. The actual election pitting Republican Steve Scalise against Democrat Gilda Reed is May third and is open to all voters. The primaries were closed, party-only elections.

Hornets on the Road
The New Orleans Hornets are on the road for games three and four of the first round NBA playoffs. The team flew out Thursday for tonight's game in Dallas. Fans are gathering at official Hornets watch parties in New Orleans and Covington to watch the team take on the Mavericks. The Hornets hold a 2-0 lead in the best of seven series. Game four is Sunday in Dallas. If needed, game five will be in New Orleans. Tickets are nearly sold out.

Former Parish President Gets Probation and Fine
Former Livingston Parish President Barney Dewey Ratcliff Junior was sentenced to three years' probation for submitting a fake document to a bank. Ratcliff has also been fined 25-hundred dollars. He pleaded guilty in September to a federal count of making a false official writing.
