Senator Vitter Blasts FDA for Suppressing Avastin Information

U.S. Sen. David Vitter today sent a letter sharply criticizing the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research for the FDA’s failure to respond to Vitter’s repeated inquiries regarding the agency’s pending decision to take the drug Avastin “off-label” for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer.

Work Stalled

A four cent per gallon gasoline tax approved back in 1989 just hasn't kept up with inflation and is forcing two long awaited road projects in the New Orleans area to be put on hold. The five mile long Florida Avenue Bridge in Orleans Parish and a stretch of 1-12 in St. Tammany Parish are the unfunded projects. Mark Lambert with the Department of Transportation and Development says there are environmental concerns with those projects, but the state is still committed to funding them.

Shooting Begins on "W"

Shooting begins today in Shreveport for the film "W," directed by Oliver Stone. Among the films Stone is noted for are "Platoon," "JFK," "Wall Street" and "Nixon." Alexandyr Kent, who also writes a Louisiana movie blog, says "W" is probably the highest- profile film to come into the area. "W" stars Josh Brolin in the title role. Kent says the film will cover a major portion of the life of George W. Bush.

Gas Prices Go Up

Day after day, new gas price records continue to be set in Louisiana. Triple-A reports the statewide average price of unleaded regular is up another penny over Sunday to three-dollars-61-cents. That's 33-cents higher than a month ago and 75-cents /igher than on this date last year. Around the state, regular is averaging three-62 in Lafayette, three-58 in Baton Rouge, and three-63 in New Orleans. As for the price of diesel, statewide it's up another two-cents over Sunday to a record high of four-23.

Wooley Visit Postponed

Former state insurance commissioner Robert Wooley was scheduled to appear before the state ethics board yesterday, but the hearing was postponed. Wooley faces possible state ethics charges for a hunting trip that the legislative audior office's claim was partially paid for by the Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corporation.

Man Dies In Motorcycle Crash

A motorcycle crash west of Kinder resulted in a man's death. Adam Marcantel lost control in a curve in the road and was thrown from his motorcycle. He was airlifted to a hospital, but later died from his injuries. Standard toxicology tests are pending.
