Army: New Orleans Flood Controls Better, But More Needed

 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working to install temporary flood protection in New Orleans before Tropical Storm Gustav strengthens into a hurricane.  Forecast models show it could hit between Mobile, Alabama, and the Texas coast next week.  As for New Orleans, the Corps of Engineers says flood controls are better than those in place before Hurricane Katrina three years ago, but gaps still exist.

New Orleans Area Officials Preparing For Gustav Strike

With memories of Hurricane Katrina still fresh in their minds three-years after the storm killed hundreds and devastated southeast Louisiana, officials in cities and parishes are implementing upgraded emergency operation plans.  New Orleans Police Superintendent Warren Riley says the Big Easy is ready for the criminal element should a mandatory evacuation be called by Mayor Ray Nagin.

SPCA In New Orleans Closes Shelter, Preparing To Evacuate Animals

Tropical Storm Gustav may be several days from making landfall along the Gulf Coast, but the New Orleans shelter operated by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals closed Wednesday afternoon to prepare for the evacuation of all Animals in its care.  Personnel will begin transporting all owned dogs, cats and other Animals to its shelter partner in Baton Rouge this afternoon.  Strays and adoptable Animals will be evacuated tomorrow and Saturday to shelters in Texas.  Gustav is expected to become a major hurricane after it enters the Gulf of Mexico as early as Saturday with a southeast Louisiana landfall still a strong possibility.

Two Men Arrested For Ripping Off Books From LSU Bookstore

  Whatever their reason, two men are accused of grabbing a set of books Wednesday afternoon from the LSU Co-Op Bookstore in Baton Rouge, but they didn't get far.  It seems the store owner is a former Louisiana State trooper and gave chase.  But when Chris Prescott confronted the pair in the parking lot, 29-year-old Michael Barback struck him with his vehicle as he fled.  Prescott was not injured and notified the State Police post of what had happened.  Barback and 24-year-old Nicholas Kalivoda were arrested a short time later and booked for aggravated battery and theft of goods.

Louisiana's Capital City Bracing For Possible Gustav Impact

With the three-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina rapidly approaching, Louisiana residents are preparing for the possibility of yet another major weather event.  East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Kip Holden is urging residents to take action now for the possibility that Tropical Storm Gustav will grow to become a major hurricane before it makes landfall early next week.
