Millions Going To Farmers Flooding Their Fields
The government is doling out $20-million to farmers in eight states, including Louisiana, to create habitats for migratory birds whose usual Gulf wintering spots may be fouled by the massive BP oil spill.

State Legislative Auditor Issues Critical Report On DeSoto Parish Police Jury
The state Legislative Auditor has issued a report critical of the
DeSoto Parish Police Jury. The report says the police jury has
incomplete written policies and fails to review monthly financial
statements. New parish administrator Steve Brown says all problems
cited in the audit are being addressed.

Police Investigate Slaying Of Woman
(Baton Rouge, LA) -- Baton Rouge police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found Monday behind a wooden shed at a residence. Authorities say 26-year-old Temeka Watts had been shot multiple times. A woman who lives at the home was getting ready to leave for work Monday morning when she noticed blood spattered along her white car. The trail led to the location of Watts' body. Texas Man Arrested Following Chase
(LaPlace, LA) -- St. John the Baptist Parish authorities say a Texas man is in custody on a charge of attempted first-degree murder after he hit a sheriff's deputy with his vehicle as he was being pursued Monday. Officials say a deputy tried to stop a car driven by 27-year-old David Garcia of Brownsville after it went through a stop sign in LaPlace [[luh-PLOSS]], but Garcia sped off. Authorities say several other deputies joined in the pursuit, during which Garcia struck a deputy who had stepped out of his patrol car. Officials say Garcia finally stopped his vehicle and began to flee on foot, but was apprehended. The deputy was treated at a hospital and released.

Four Arrested In Internet Sting
(New Orleans, LA) -- Authorities say four men have been arrested as a result of a sting operation by the Louisiana Electronic Crimes Task Force. Darin Lake with the Secret Service's New Orleans office says the task force, which includes several area law enforcement agencies, says 30-year-old Shawn Vincent of New Orleans, 30-year-old Billy Farmer of Ponchatoula, 25-year-old Brandon Thibodeaux of Houma, and 41-year-old Jeffery Smith of Wylie, Texas, face charges of computer-aided solicitation of a minor. Lake says warrants have been issued for more suspects. The task force handles cyber crimes that include child pornography, identity theft and hacking. Tuesday, June 30, 2009 9:42 AM

Man Found Shot To Death In Suburban N.O.
(Avondale, LA) -- Jefferson Parish authorities say a man was shot to death in Avondale Monday night. Deputies say 46-year-old Wayne Wooden of Avondale was found lying in a street, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say crime scene investigators collected a number of spent .9mm shell casings near Wooden's body. Investigators haven't yet identified suspects or a motive.
