$40-million headed to LA to help rebuild and restore fishing industry 40 million dollars of Federal money from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration is headed to Louisiana to help rebuild and restore the fishing industry, following hurricanes Gustav and Ike. Napoleonville Congressman Charlie Melancon says oystermen, shrimpers, and fishermen, who were just getting back to normal after Katrina and Rita, now again find themselves without docks, icehouses, and fueling stations. Sally Clausen says higher education institutions should be rewarded for filling the gaps in Louisiana's workforce with educated and trained residents. Gift card sales estimated to drop 6% this year Gift cards are a popular holiday gift, but with the economic downturn, retailers are expected to make a harder push for shoppers to purchase actual merchandise. That's according to Dawn Johnson, with the Louisiana Retailers Association. The National Retail Federation estimates that gift card sales will drop about six-percent this year.

Louisiana ranks 33rd in country in funding anti-tobacco programs for children Louisiana ranks 33rd in the country, when it comes to funding programs to protect children from tobacco. Danny McGoldrick, with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, says tobacco companies spend more than 291-million dollars a year in Louisiana on marketing their products.
