Mineral Lease Scam State Attorney General Buddy Caldwell is warning property owners across the state about possible mineral-lease scams. Caldwell says an example scenario includes a property owner signing a mineral lease without reading it thoroughly, and unwittingly turning over all rights and power of attorney to that company. Caldwell says before you sign any mineral lease, make sure you get an attorney or a mineral rights expert to read it--or you'll have a tough time fighting it in court, should it turn out to be a scam. Caldwell says about 200 complaints of possible scams have been phoned into his office. Thursday, September 18, 2008 7:00 PM

Citizens Insurance Claims How hard have Hurricanes Gustav and Ike hit the state-run property insurer-of-last resort? Not as badly as Katrina and Rita, according to Citizens Insurance CEO John Wortman. He says they're expecting about 50-thousand claims from this year's storms, compared to 80-thousand claims in 2005. Wortman expects the damages to come to 150 million dollars; Citizens has 350 million cash on hand. Thursday, September 18, 2008 6:56 PM

Recovery Under Way In Iberia, Vermilion
(New Iberia, LA) -- Two of the parishes hardest hit by Hurricane Ike--Iberia and Vermilion--continue to move foward with rebuilding and recovery. Erath Mayor George Dupuis says the scene in his town is reminiscent of the aftermath of Hurricane Rita three years ago. A distribution station hes been set up in front of the Erath city hall, where residents can pick up Meals Ready to Eat, ice, water and tarps. Dupuis says at least 200 homes in the town sustained flood damage. In Delcambre [[DELL-kumm]], officials say the town looks like a big trash pile, as residents clean out their homes and yards. Council Rolls Millages Forward
(Lafayette, LA) -- Most Lafayette Parish property owners will be paying more in property taxes, now that the City-Parish Council has voted to roll several tax millages forward. Tax reassessment is taking place this year, and property values in most cases have risen since 2004. State law mandates that millages automatically roll back as property values increase--unless a taxing authority rolls them forward. The move means higher taxes for property owners, even though the tax rate will remain the same. Thursday, September 18, 2008 7:18 AM
