Budget Cut Predictions
Health care professionals say proposed deep state budget cuts for
health care will cost Louisiana thousands of jobs and affect the
quality of health care. Paul Salles, CEO of the Metropolitan
Hospital Council of New Orleans, cites research done by LSU on the
impact of more than 400-million in cuts to health care and
hospitals.
Salles says urges state residents to call their Senators and ask
them to restore the funding cuts.

LEAP Test Legislation
The House Education Committee approves a bill that would require
state Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek to recommend
possible changes to the state's standardized LEAP tests. New
Orleans Representative Charmaine Staies says the measure would at
least open dialogue on whether the tests should be the sole
criterion for promotion to the next grade.
Patrick Dobard, and aide to Superintendent Pastorek, says the state
is interested in developing criteria for promotion for a student
who fails the LEAP test. The bill moves to the full House.

Powerball/Lotto
Though last night's 232-million dollar winning Powerball ticket was
bought in South Dakota, not Louisiana, there's still hope for a big
win here. Still no Lotto winner, so the jackpot for that drawing
climbs to 1 million, 675-thousand dollars on Saturday.

Gas Prices
Seeing the price of gas creep steadily up and wondering about your
planned summer trip? Louisiana Triple-A fuel analyst Don Redman says
don't worry--there's no indication gas prices are going to do what
they did last summer.
Redman says after last year's travel slump because of gas
prices--coupled with worries about the recession keeping people home
this year--many hotels, retaurants and even airlines are offering
deep discounts this summer.
