Jammers May Be on The Way Out

It started out as a bill to ban radar detectors, but was amended to just ban radar jammers, instead. State senator Don Cravins of Lafayette says these electronic devices help drivers break the law and should be banned in Louisiana. The Senate Transportation Committee agreed sending it to full Senate next. To add insult to injury, former state Highway Safety Commissioner Colonel Jim Champagne says some radar jammers don't just block the signal from police radar guns, the jammers disable cops' equipment. Cravins says people stopped for speeding, or when a radar gun signal is disrupted, won't be presumed guilty if they've got a jammer in the car. They won't get a ticket if the jammer isn't plugged in.

Gas Prices Continue Upward

There's no end in sight to the upward spiral of gas prices across Louisiana. Triple-A reports the statewide average price of regular in Louisiana is up another three-cents today compared to Thursday. The new record price is just over three-35 a gallon. And diesel has reached the all-time high of four-dollars-four-cents in Louisiana. It could be worse, and definitely is elsewhere in the U.S., given that the nationwide average price of regular is three-44 and diesel is at four-16 a gallon.

Lafayette PD Has to Rehire An Officer

A state appeals court has ordered the Lafayette Police Department to rehire an officer who was fired after testing positive for steroids.  The court ruled that supervisors had no valid reason to test John Keith Richard, who says the positive test was a result of a tainted dietary supplement.  Richard was one of two officers fired for testing positive for steroids in 2005 during an investigation into connections a drug suspect had with the police department.  Richard argued the department did not have "reasonable suspicion" to test him.  He lost one appeal before the Municipal Fire and Police Civil Service Board and another to state District Judge John Trahan.  Richard's attorney, WIlliam Goode, says his client is currently working in New Orleans, where he owns a security business.  Goode says it's uncertain whether Richard will rejoin the Lafayette Police Department.

Marinello Trial To Be in Lafayette

The Louisiana Supreme Court has ruled that the trial of former New Orleans radio and TV broadcaster Vince Marinello will be held in Lafayette.  Marinello, who's 70 years old, is accused of fatally shooting his estranged wife, 45-year-old Liz Marinello, in front on a Metairie office building in August 2006.  Wednesday, the high court denied a request from prosecutors and defense attorneys to import a jury from elsewhere in the state to be seated in Gretna for Marinello's second-degree murder trial.  Earlier, the defense argued that a fair trial by a Jefferson Parish jury was impossible because of pre-trial media coverage.  Jury selection in Lafayette is slated to begin May 12th.

Lafayette School Board Revises Revenue Plan

The Lafayette Parish School Board has approved a plan that revises how excess revenue from a 2002 half-cent tax fund is passed out among eligible teachers.  The plan calls for a one-thousand-dollar increase to be applied the the school district's teacher salary schedule starting with the next school year.  The remainder will be distributed in a lump sum, which means eligible teachers will receive an extra 822 dollars in their paychecks in May.
