Louisiana Gets Grant to Help Kids
Louisiana is getting a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
to help get more kids enrolled in the state Children's Health
Insurance Program.

Dept. of Homeland Sec. Wants Local Loans Forgiven
The Department of Homeland Security is proposing that loans local
governments received after the 2005 hurricanes be forgiven. Just
over one billion dollars in community disaster loans was handed out
here in Louisiana and in Mississippi after hurricanes Katrina and
Rita. Homeland Security says it's proposing to forgive all or part
of a community's loan if local revenues after the disaster aren't
sufficient to meet operating costs. A final rule is expected to
follow a public comment period.

Census Workers Out and About In Louisiana
Starting today, U-S Census workers will canvass neighborhoods across
Louisiana to verify addresses in the first phase of the official
head count for 2010. Kat Smith with the Census Bureau says the
head-counting process will present challenges.
Smith says in Louisiana about 15-hundred workers will be deployed.
She says this is an important process

Gov. Jindal Taking Criticism for Cutting Costs at State Historic Sites
Some people are troubled by the Jindal administration's plan to cut
costs by closing the state's 16 historic sites to visitors on all
but two days a week. A Baton Rouge Advocate editorial voiced
concerns that the move will negatively impact local economies in
areas near these sites by discouraging tourism.
Governor Jindal says the cuts are regrettable. But he says, under
his plan, state historic sites will still be available to the
public--just on fewer days in the year.

State Parks
After all the bad news we've been getting about the recession,
here's some good news: Louisiana's state parks are seeing an
increase in visitors. Assistant Secretary of State Parks Stuart
Johnson says around 2 million people used state parks in
2008--seeing them as a low-cost alternative. Johnson says
visitorship dropped off post-Katrina, now it's back above what it
was before.
