Medicaid Money from Stimulus Less Than Expected
The state's Secretary of Health & Hospitals says extra Medicaid money in the federal economic stimulus package will be less than first expected, and must be spent prudently. Alan Levine says that's because the projected $1.1-billion in federal funds lasts only 27 months. Levine says that money CAN be used to plug some gaps in the state's budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1st, but cannot be relied upon in future annual budgets. He says he understands the governor's reluctance to dive into taking and spending the federal stimulus dollars.

Gov. Jindal and the Democratic Response to Stimulus Money
Governor Jindal says he's cautious about accepting money for Louisiana contained in the 787-billion-dollar federal stimulus packages passed last week by Congress. But Democratic state lawmakers want Louisiana to get that money. New Orleans Representative Walker Hines and State Senator John Alario of Westwago think Jindal needs to take the 3.8-billion lined up for the state and not be in a rush to turn down stimulus money. Jindal says he wants to take a good look at what's being offered and what strings are attached, if any.
