Blood Cancer Treatment Shows Extra Promise
(Undated) -- An anti-cancer compound already under study for the treatment of blood cancers may also be used to treat cancers in the head and neck. Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York are reporting the discovery today. Mouth, throat and voice box cancers are the sixth-most common form of cancer in the U.S., affecting about 40-thousand people each year. Typical treatments range from surgery to chemotherapy and radiation. Einstein researchers say the new class of agents they're looking at affect the availability of genes that become either too active or not active enough at producing proteins so become cancerous. Researchers say they've made a serendipitous discovery. One particular agent, or inhibitor, that's proven successful at treating cancers of the blood also kills tumor cells removed from the head and neck of cancer patients. The discovery is a first step toward a possible treatment for head and neck cancer that involves fewer side effects than current therapies. Research details are in todays online edition of "The Journal of Pathology."

House Panel Approves Expropriation Bill
(Baton Rouge, LA) -- A House committee has advanced a measure that would give Lafayette Consolidated Government additional expropriation powers relative to a Kaliste Saloom Road project. Lafayette Representative Joel Robideaux [[RO-buh-do]] says the bill would allow the government to buy the property and move forward with the project, while allowing the property owner to negotiate the sale price in court. The mile-long section of Kaliste Saloom Road in question includes about 60 pieces of commercial and residential property. Robideaux says the bill would expedite the expropriation process, which is often impeded by property owners who refuse to sell at a price the government considers fair market value.

Arrest Made Following Triple Shooting
(Church Point, LA) -- A Church Point man has been arrested after a man was shot and killed and two others were wounded during a birthday party at a local residence Saturday. Police Chief Albert Venable says 29-year-old Jonathan Citizen is accused of killing 43-year-old Paul Reginald Landry during an apparent argument over a set of tires. Authorities say Citizen showed up at the party and hit one of the guests before leaving. Police say Citizen returned several hours later and began firing a rifle in the direction of a crowd standing in a yard. One man was shot in the leg and above the right eye. Officials say Citizen left the scene and returned for a third time, this time approaching the home from a wooded area, and fired his rifle again. Another man was wounded in the leg and shoulder. Police say, as Landry approached Citizen to get him to stop, Landry was shot in the chest, back and head. Citizen was later arrested in Opelousas. He faces charges of second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and second-degree battery.
