Police Say Crash Associated With Drug Deal

(Lafayette, LA)  --  Lafayette Police say an incident in which a car crashed into a house in the 400 block of Southwest Evangeline Thruway Sunday evening was a result of a drug deal that went bad.  Authorities say 25-year-old Kervin Gallien of Lafayette was involved in a drug deal taking place in a parking lot of a convenience store.  Police say the person meeting Gallien pulled a gun and demanded drugs.  Gallien fled in his vehicle with his four-year-old son.  Gallien reportedly told police the gunman chased him and his his vehicle from behind.  The impact caused Gallien's vehicle to slam into the house, causing damage to the front porch.  The child was taken to a hospital, and is in stable condition.  Gallien faces charges of child desertion, distribution of marijuana, and illegal use of a controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a juvenile.

Crime Rate New Orleans Highest, Lafayette Ranks Low
A new report from CQ Press ranks New Orleans as having the highest crime rate in the country. Lafayette ranks 75th. CQ spokesman Ben Krasney says the 2008 City Crime Rankings measure rates of murder, rape, robbery, burglary, vehicle theft and aggravated assault in hundreds of American
cities.
The report also ranks Baton Rouge 31st, Shreveport 54th. Many criticize the CQ Press report as being highly unscientific, and hardly conclusive, but nevertheless damaging to a city's reputation.
