IRS Says Letters Are Coming

The letter is in the mail, and a few months after that so will the check. The Internal Revenue Service says letters will go out starting the first week in March reminding 130 million households to file their 2007 tax returns in order to receive their share of the 2008 economic stimulus package. The one-time stimulus payment of up to $600, $1,200 if you are married filing jointly, will start in May. There also is a $300 per child payment for qualifying children younger than 17. Vitter Responds To The UN

The United Nations is criticizing something that's happening here in Louisiana--though they're pointing a finger at the federal government, NOT Louisiana. U-N experts say demolition of public housing in New Orleans is forcing people into homelessness, is increasing poverty, and should be viewed as a violation of human rights. U-S Senator David Vitter responded with this quote, "Sadly, the debate on public housing reform in New Orleans has taken a turn toward theater of the absurd. The United Nations, an organization that has been scrutinized for its exploitation of the poor in the Oil for Food Scandal, has deemed itself a high enough authority to look down its nose at us here in the United States over the public housing debate in New Orleans." The U-N disagrees with the HUD redevlopment plan which Vitter says promotes homeownership and provides a fresh alternative to the decades-old, failed New Orleans public housing system that trapped people in a cycle of poverty and crime.

New System For First Responders

We heard about it after 9-11 and during Katrina and Rita--the lack of inter-operable communications systems for first responders. Louisiana now has a timetable for an interoperable system, and the governor is budgeting 34 million dollars to make it happen. Louisiana State police commander Col. Mike Edmondson says they've already tested the new system--more than once--and south Louisiana will be covered this coming hurricane season. Mark Cooper, state Emergency Operations director says local governments ARE going to have to pick up some of the tab, though--mostly the cost of buying the radios that work on the statewide emergency frequency. The Sheriffs Association, and Order of Chiefs of Police are also helping out with some of the costs.
