Williams Leaving Jindal Camp

After less than six months on the job as Governor Bobby Jindal's legislative director, 65-year-old Tommy Williams has resigned. Williams says he left on good terms, but would not say what prompted his decision to leave. In two special sessions and the just ended regular legislative session, Jindal was highly successful in winning the approval of state lawmakers on ethics and budgetary reform initiatives, but has come under sharp criticism, and is now the target of a recall effort, after the legislature voted to double its base-pay and Jindal vowed he would not veto it. Recall efforts are also underway against House Speaker Jim Tucker and three other legislators.

National HIV Testing Day

Today is National HIV Testing Day, and Louisiana state health officials are offering tests for the AIDS virus free-of-charge. Jack Carrell is manager of the state Office of Public Health's HIV/AIDS program. He says an estimated 15-thousand Louisianians have HIV, and many don't know it. Carrell says state health officials are urging all to go to parish health units and free clinics and get the free tests. He says extra effort will be made to get African-American men to test for HIV. He says over 70-percent of new HIV cases in the state are within that group. He says the new HIV test takes only minutes. Information is kept strictly confidential. He says an HIV test should be as important as checking for diabetes or any other disease.

Board Members Calls It Quits

The chairman of the state Ethics Board, and three other members, say they're resigning due to changes made to the Board earlier this year in a special legislative session. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says reforms were passed in that session that stripped "judge & jury" powers from the Ethics Board. Board Chairman Hank Perret and members John Greene & Gwen Hamilton say they're dropping from the panel, along with Ethics Board administrator Richard Sherburne. During the 1st special session, lawmakers took the Board's powers to judge and punish alleged ethics violators away, and gave it to a panel of administrative law judges. Pinsonat says he feels the exodus from the Ethics Board will fail to resonate with the people of the state.
