Too Many Universities, Colleges and Tech Colleges?
Does Louisiana have too many state universities? House Speaker Jim Tucker says he's filed legislation that would examine that question. With colleges statewide facing 15-percent cuts in state funding, Tucker wonders if the state is spreading itself too thin, with the shear number of universities, colleges & tech schools.
Higher Education Commissioner Sally Clausen says she has no problem with Tucker's bill, which would commission a panel of experts to study the issue; many of them from outside Louisiana. Tucker says now is the time to examine this issue as future budget cuts are possible.

Council To Discuss Staffing For Fire Department

(Lafayette, LA)  --  The Lafayette Fire Department will be part of the agenda during Tuesday night's meeting of the Lafayette City-Parish Council.  Council member Jay Castille says he'd like to see more firefighters, higher salaries and more fire stations for the department.  Castille says the department recently received a rating of "two" by the Insurance Services Office, which rates fire departments on criteria such as number of employees and types of equipment on hand.  The councilman says the department came close to dropping to lower rating of "three" because the level of pay is making it difficult to retain firefighters.
