Council Approves Introductory Security Ordinance
(Lafayette, LA) -- The Lafayette City-Parish Council has signed off on an introductory ordinance that would put five parish sheriff's deputies on downtown patrol Friday and Saturday nights. The patrol would be effective for one year, during which deputies would be paid 25 dollars per hour. The ordinance will go up for a final vote next month. The security detail is different from the one being negotiated between Lafayette Consolidated Government and bar owners. Under that plan, Lafayette police officers would provide security at bars in the downtown, McKinley Street and Simcoe Street areas. Bar owners would pay monthly fees for the service. Legislative Auditor and Insurance Commissioner Duke It Out... Again The Legislative Auditor is at loggerheads with the state Insurance Commissioner again. Last time, it was a battle over correspondence with Citizens Insurance, now Steve Theriot says Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon may have broken the law when cutting rates for the state-run property insurer of last resort in 2006. Theriot says Citizens' rates must be at least 10-percent over the market rate. Donelon disagrees with the audit findings, and says state law wasn't broken. Tuesday, November 18, 2008 5:06 PM

Senator Landrieu Attempts to Pass Hurricane Aid Senator Mary Landrieu says she'll try again--during the "lame duck" session of Congress--to get Louisiana farmers some emergency disaster relief aid. Landrieu says her plan is for over $1-billion in assistance for farmers who were hit hard by the September hurricanes. Landrieu tried to get the same package through in October, soon after the storms, but her efforts were blocked by Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn. She says she'll keep trying, though bills to which her aid package could be attached may be scarce during this last few days of action on Capitol Hill, before breaking for the remainder of the year.
