Refineries After Ike
Gasoline prices continue to rise, even though the price of crude oil continues to fall. Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association spokesman Larry Wall says that's because hurricanes Gustav and Ike affected 28
refineries in Louisiana and Texas. Wall says it will take a week or two for most of these refineries to
get back up to speed, and then gasoline prices should head back down--depending on what happens in the tropics.

Highly-publicized Trials Delayed
Hurricane Ike delayed two highly-publicized trials that were set to begin Monday in Lafayette. Jury selection in the health care fraud trial of cardiologist Mehmood M. Patel has been continued until
tomorrow. The trial of former New Orleans broadcaster Vince Marinello, who's accused of killing his wife, has been continued without a date.

Gustav/Ike Power Outages
Power outages from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike continue to plague our state. Figures released today by the Public Service Commission show about 69-thousand electric customers across Louisiana are still
without electricity. But that's down from an estimated 93,000 yesterday.

DSS Food Stamp Snafu
The Department of Social Services says a computer glitch which caused some 22-thousand people to erroneously received duplicate food stamp benefits, has now been corrected and measures are in
place to prevent future system errors. The department also says other measures are in place to speed up application processing and uploading benefits onto electronic cards.

Man Dies After Gun Discharges


(Grand Coteau, LA)  --  Police in Grand Coteau say a man is dead after a handgun accidentally discharged as he was driving a vehicle with two passengers.  Authorities say 18-year-old Toddeus Chavis was shot in the head shortly before 4 p.m. Sunday.  Police say the passengers, 18-year-old Ben Chavis and a 16-year-old, face charges in the incident.  Ben Chavis faces counts of principal to manslaughter, obstruction of justice, illegal possession of a stolen firearm and possession of marijuana. The charges against the unidentified 16-year-old were not specified.
