National Safety Council Wants State Cell Phone Driving Ban
Of course, if it isn't alcohol causing a crash, it just might be someone.... on a
cell phone. The National Safety Council is calling on
states to pass a total ban of cell phone use while driving. The
congressionally-chartered group says 26-hundred deaths and 12-thousand
serious injuries each year
can be tracked to drivers talking on the phone. New Orleans
Representative Austin Badon, who failed to pass a ban last year on
cell phone use among drivers, says he'll try again.
But Colonel John Leblanc, of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission,
says they will not push for a cell phone ban in this year's legistative session.
Leblanc says the most recent Louisiana data shows that cell phone
use accounts for one-percent of all crashes.

Lafayette Man Charged In 2008 Accident

(Lafayette, LA)  --  State Police have arrested a Lafayette man in connection with a fatal crash in Evangeline Parish that killed 62-year-old Feliz Shillow, of Mamou, in April 2008.  Troop I spokesman David Anderson says 29-year-old Joseph Cashen faces a charge of vehicular homicide, following toxicology test results that show Cashen had illegal narcotics in his system at the time of the crash.  Anderson says Cashen also faces counts of vehicular negligent injuring, second-offense DWI and driving left of center.  Authorities have said Cashen was driving north on Louisiana Highway-13 when he crossed into the oncoming lane and slammed into a pickup truck driven by Willie Shillow, of Mamou [[mah-MOO]].  Felix Shillow, a passenger in the pickup, was pronounced dead at the scene.  Cashen and a passenger in his vehicle were seriously injured.
