State Fire Marshall Asks for Fireworks Caution New Year's Eve, and many will be sizzling the old year out and the new year in with fireworks. State Fire Marshal Butch Browning has issued a plea to be very careful with them. He says nationally, fireworks cause an estimated 21-million dollars in property damage each year. And he says, even sparklers burn at over 1200 degrees. Fireworks are illegal in the Lafayette city limits.

Jindal's First Year in Review 2008 was a big year for Bobby Jindal, taking office as governor, pushing an ethics reform plan through a special session, a being tapped a "rising star" by the national GOP. But Gannett News political reporter Mike Hasten says there was at least one major speed bump along the way--the legislative pay raise debacle. Jindal eventually vetoed that pay raise.

Patel Convicted on Most Counts A federal jury has returned guilty verdicts in 51 of 91 fraud counts against a Lafayette cardiologist. Dr. Mehmood Patel was acquitted on the remaining 40 charges. Full Fiscal Impact of Jindal's Proposed Cuts Unveiled Governor Bobby Jindal says his suggested cuts in the state budget would disappear the 341-million dollar shortfall and bring the budget back into balance. Jindal's executive order lays out over 162-million dollars in budget cuts he can make unilaterally. However, the remaining proposed cuts must be approved by the Joint Legislative Budget Committee when it meets January 9th.
