The Lafayette City-Parish Council is set for an initial vote Tuesday evening on a proposal to prohibit "cruising" in areas of Lafayette that include downtown and the Simcoe-Surrey street corridor.

Book Claims U.S. Spied On Iraqi Leaders
A new book claims the U.S. spied on Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and other Iraqi leaders. The "Washington Post" reports one of Bob Woodward's sources in the book says, quote, "We know everything he says." Woodward also claims the U.S. troop surge in 2007 wasn't the primary reason for violence declining in Iraq. McCain-Palin Ticket Hits The Road After GOP Convention
The GOP ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin hits the road today after last night's closing session of the Republican National Convention. After accepting the GOP nominations, the Arizona senator and Alaska governor end the week with rallies in the battleground states of Wisconsin and Michigan. In his acceptance speech last night, the 72-year-old McCain promised "Change is coming" and vowed to end the long standing "political rancor" in the nation's capital. Illinois State Senator Calls For End To School Boycott
Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff is scheduled to be sentenced today in Washington, DC. The "New York Times" reports he's seeking leniency from Judge Ellen Huvelle. Abramoff pled guilty in January 2006 to defrauding American Indian tribes and corrupting public officials in Washington. Prosecutors have already asked Huvelle to shave years off of the jail term recommended in federal sentencing guidelines due to Abramoff's cooperation in an extensive investigation. Boeing And Union To Continue Negotiations After Strike Vote
Labor action against Boeing is waiting in the wings. The 27-thousand member Seattle local of the International Association of Machinists has voted overwhelmingly to stage a strike against Boeing. Union leaders announced the decision following yesterday's vote in which 87-percent of the rank-and-file chose to walk off the job effective immediately. However, the union says it will honor the company's request for another 48-hours of negotiations, delaying the walkout. Today Could Bring Large Protests To Republican National Convention
Protest organizers expect big demonstrations for today's finale of the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. A rally will take place at the state capitol today, after which an anti-war group will march to the Xcel Center. The protesters aim to contrast their anti-war stance with John McCain's speech to delegates tonight. The police presence around the convention will continue to be large as well, with police seen around the area on horseback, bicycles, and rollerblades in addition to extensive foot and air patrols.
