(LaPlace, LA)  --  St. John the Baptist Parish authorities say a Texas man is in custody on a charge of attempted first-degree murder after he hit a sheriff's deputy with his vehicle as he was being pursued Monday.  Officials say a deputy tried to stop a car driven by 27-year-old David Garcia of Brownsville after it went through a stop sign in LaPlace [[luh-PLOSS]], but Garcia sped off.  Authorities say several other deputies joined in the pursuit, during which Garcia struck a deputy who had stepped out of his patrol car.  Officials say Garcia finally stopped his vehicle and began to flee on foot, but was apprehended.  The deputy was treated at a hospital and released.
