The government is doling out $20-million to farmers in eight states, including Louisiana, to create habitats for migratory birds whose usual Gulf wintering spots may be fouled by the massive BP oil spill.

How Did New Orleans Area Lawmakers Vote on the Bailout?

(Undated) -- Only one of Southeast Louisiana's U.S. representatives voted for the economic bailout plan in Congress. Democrat Charlie Melancon says he had to support the plan, because he couldn't sit back and do nothing. Fellow Democrat William Jefferson voted no. He says leading economists in our country cannot agree on whether a bailout of our nation's financial institutions is needed. Republican Steve Scalise says he worked to defeat the bill because he is pushing an alternative plan that would have the financial sector pay for the bailout, not the taxpayers. |
