Lawmaker Seeking Ban Of Red Light And Speed Van Cameras

A New Orleans area lawmaker has pre-filed bills to get rid of red light cameras and speed vans. Representative Jeff Arnold says he's filed his outright ban of traffic cams again this year, and a second bill that would prevent local governments installing the cams and the civil fines they create, without voter approval. Arnold feels red light cams and speed vans deprive drivers of due process, and are more about generating revenue from fines, and less about public safety. His ban last year was defeated by opposition from the Louisiana Municipal Association, who says public safety is the key reason for using the cameras. John Gallagher, attorney for the Louisiana Municipal Association, says the group would oppose that bill again. He says state government should stay out of municipal affairs.
