Hebert Pushing Mini-Trucks
Faced with ever-rising gasoline costs, one state lawmakers is seeking to allow extra-fuel-efficient vehicles on the state's roads. Jeanerette Senator Troy Hebert says his bill would make mini-trucks, also known as k-class vehicles, street legal. He says the trucks get from 45 to 55 miles per gallon. The mini-trucks are imported, and cost only around $4-thousand dollars. The State Capitol uses several for security patrols around the grounds. Hebert says Louisiana would not be the only state to allow minis on the highway, but there is some concern about the crash-safety of the vehicles in on-road situations. Bigger than a golf cart, but smaller than the smallest economy car, the mini-trucks have a 660cc engine that gets remarkable gas mileage. Hebert says his Senate Bill 771 would allow them on almost all state roads. Hebert's bill has cleared the Senate and is scheduled before a House committee - probably this week.
