A number of Lafayette residents and businesses have filed lawsuits seeking damages as a result of Saturday's derailment of a train carrying hydrochloric acid. Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway operated the train that left the tracks below the Ambassador Caffery Parkway overpass. The derailment prompted evacuation of homes and businesses within a one-mile radius, affecting about three-thousand people. All lawsuits filed in state and federal court thus far have been submitted as class-action, meaning attorneys are looking to have the courts combine similar claims into one lawsuit. BNSF continues to process individual claims at a location set up in the Mardi Gras Ballroom at the Cajundome.
