Former Coach Baldwin Case Thrown Out

A state appeals court has thrown out a judgment granted to a former UL football coach who charged that he was fired because of his race. In a unanimous vote, the court threw out the more than six million dollars awarded to Jerry Baldwin, who coached the Ragin Cajuns from 1999-2001. Baldwin had charged that he was fired from his job because he was African-American and a jury agreed with the claim, awarding Baldwin the judgment from the University and former Athletics Director Nelson Schexnayder.  In overturning the judgment the appeals court ruled that the state court erred in its charge to the jury, ruled that the allowing of testimony from two witnesses was in error, and ruled that a juror should have been excluded from the jury pool by pre-emptive strike. The court remanded the case back to state court for possible retrial.  Baldwin had a record of 6-27 in his three seasons as football coach.
