Last summer's hurricanes have had an effect on Louisiana rice
farmers. The National Agricultural Statistics Service says farmers
weren't able to plant as many acres this year because of saltwater
intrusion from hurricanes Gustav and Ike. The agency estimates
about 420-thousand rice acres were planted in Louisiana this
year--about 50-thousand fewer than last year.
