Teachers Upset After Not Getting An Additional "Pay" Increase

Many Lafayette Parish public school teachers are upset they're not getting an additional "pay" increase....according to officials with the Lafayette Parish Association of Educators.
Last night the school board unanimously approved a "step" increase for teachers but no "other" pay raise....as they had hoped.
The Step increase will give each teacher $460 more for the upcoming school year.
According to officials with the Lafayette Parish association of educators.....they're extremely disappointed and are concerned that the 2002 tax which they say was supposed to help raise the district to first in the state for its educators...is not being used for teachers because their ranking continues to drop.
They're concern? according to the past president of LPAE Melinda Mangum, is attracting and keeping highly qualified teachers.
Mangum says more is required of teachers today...class sizes are getting bigger and the number of teachers are dwindling.
Meanwhile, parish school officials say excluding the approved step increase... there's no more money for a pay raise...because of declining local tax revenue...and state funding for educators.
