Dept. of Homeland Sec. Wants Local Loans Forgiven

The Department of Homeland Security is proposing that loans local
governments received after the 2005 hurricanes be forgiven. Just
over one billion dollars in community disaster loans was handed out
here in Louisiana and in Mississippi after hurricanes Katrina and
Rita. Homeland Security says it's proposing to forgive all or part
of a community's loan if local revenues after the disaster aren't
sufficient to meet operating costs. A final rule is expected to
follow a public comment period.
