Crawfish Outlook Is a Bit Better
Last month, crawfish farmers predicted the worst mudbug season in decades for Louisiana. Now farmers report some improvement, but the outlook is still dismal. Louisiana Crawfish Farmers Association president David Savoy says harvests have gotten a bit better. He says he and other crawfishers have taken a $1.50 per pound hit on price, yet that reduction hasn't been passed to the consumer--despite low demand. At the reduced price, he and other farmers won't break even this season. As for the crawfish themselves ... Savoy says problems with the mudbug crop differ by region. Savoy says high operating costs plus low prices and low yield has many crawfishers thinking about abandoning the business. |
