Council To Discuss Back Pay Tuesday

The Lafayette City-Parish Council is slated to meet Tuesday evening to discuss settling the long-running lawsuit over back pay for police and firefighters. The lawsuit calls for the city-parish to pay lost wages resulting from a plan in which new hires received additional pay equal to the state supplemental pay they would normally have to wait a year to receive. When the supplemental pay took effect, the city stopped the additional pay. The plaintiffs filed suit nine years ago, saying the city violated the law when it revoked the additional pay. The courts sided with the plaintiffs. In February, the city offered the plaintiffs $6.8 million to settle the nine-year-old lawsuit. The plaintiffs countered about two weeks ago with an offer to accept $8.2 million. The City-Parish Council is scheduled to meet behind closed doors Tuesday to discuss the settlement.
