Lafayette City Marshal Nikki Picard says he's dropped his lawsuit over a so-called "catch and release" jail policy after the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office agreed to require bail from those arrested on drunk driving and aggravated assault charges. The policy, which was implemented last last year, was designed to ease jail overcrowding by exempting most alleged misdemeanor offenders from paying bail as a condition of release. Picard filed suit to challenge the policy, questioning the legality of allowing those charged with DWI and aggravated assault to be released without bail. Picard says he dropped the lawsuit after the Sheriff's Office agreed to make the adjustments.
