(New York, NY) -- The principal players involved in helping to craft a settlement for injured and sick rescue and cleanup workers at Ground Zero say the agreement is a fair one. The WTC Captive Insurance Company will pay out more than 650-million dollars to the over ten-thousand people who were part of the lawsuit. Payments will be based on the severity of each worker's injuries. The insurer was created by New York City to handle the court actions related to the 9-11 attacks. Speaking about the settlement, WTC Captive Insurance Company President and CEO Christine LaSala said the agreement was reached under difficult and complicated factual legal circumstances. LaSala said the cornerstone of the settlement is a cancer insurance policy that will provide protection for plaintiffs if they develop the disease later. She called the agreement between all parties "fair, clear, transparent and efficient."
Former Special Master of the September 11th Victims Compensation Fund Kenneth Feinberg said the settlement ends what he called a "substantial injustice." He said the terms most importantly help those who injuries and illnesses did not manifest until after the 9-11 compensation fund expired. Attorney Marc Jay Bern agreed with Feinberg and LaSala's assement of the legal action, saying it proves the legal system works.
