Study: Bone Surgery Products Cause Complications, Higher Hospital Costs

(Boston, MA) -- Some bone-growth products commonly used in spinal surgery have been given poor reviews by researchers in Boston. A team of scientists report the products used in spinal fusion surgery actually increase the risk of complications and add to hospital costs. The products studied are Medtronic Incorporated's "InFuse" and Stryker Corporation's "OP-1 Implant" and "OP-1 Putty."
Researchers at Brigham & Women's Hospital found complications caused by the products increase hospital stays and costs between eleven and 41 percent, depending on the particular product used. Both companies dispute the data. The research results are published in the "Journal of the American Medical Association."
