California firefighters are making some headway against the Freeway Complex Fire in Orange County thanks to calmer winds. More than 23-thousand acres have burned in a few short days and 37-hundred firefighters are battling the blaze.
Americans who depend on part-time holiday jobs for year-end spending money may be out of luck this year. The "Washington Post" reports very little temporary holiday hiring is actually going on. Government figures issued last week show about 272-thousand retail jobs had vanished at the end of September, a 24-percent drop from the same month last year.
