 Monday, November 17th National Headlines

As Washington lawmakers return for a lame duck session this week, the Senate will debate a rescue plan for the Big Three automakers.  General Motors, Ford and Chrysler are seeking a 25-billion-dollar federal loan to keep them from possibly going bankrupt.  President Bush is recommending the money be used for day-to-day operations instead of requiring it be used to upgrade factories to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Some of President-elect Barack Obama's former campaign rivals could end up working in his new administration.  "USA Today" reports Obama has already met with former Democratic presidential primary opponent Hillary Clinton.  He'll meet in Chicago today with Arizona Senator John McCain about ways to run the federal government more effectively.

An obvious sign that Barack Obama is serious about hiring Hillary Clinton is that his aides are examining former President Bill Clinton's finances.  The "New York Times" says like every other candidate for a White House post, Hillary Clinton has to turn over records and resumes for herself and her husband.  Aides are trying to determine if there are any political skeletons in President Clinton's closet that might preclude his wife from becoming Secretary of State.

California firefighters are making some headway against the Freeway Complex Fire in Orange County thanks to calmer winds.  More than 23-thousand acres have burned in a few short days and 37-hundred firefighters are battling the blaze.

Americans who depend on part-time holiday jobs for year-end spending money may be out of luck this year.  The "Washington Post" reports very little temporary holiday hiring is actually going on.  Government figures issued last week show about 272-thousand retail jobs had vanished at the end of September, a 24-percent drop from the same month last year.

"Entertainment Tonight" reports singer Britney Spears wants to give her many fans a peek at her private life.  For three months, filmmakers followed the pop star to capture how she lived day to day for the new documentary "Britney: For The Record."  It will air November 30th on MTV at 10:00 p.m. Eastern.
