Millions Going To Farmers Flooding Their Fields
The government is doling out $20-million to farmers in eight states, including Louisiana, to create habitats for migratory birds whose usual Gulf wintering spots may be fouled by the massive BP oil spill.

Shreveport Child States Youngest Member of Mensa
A Shreveport kindergarten student is now the state's youngest member of Mensa. 5-year-old Jacob Frederick has been tested and qualified for the academic organization whose members must be certified as having IQs ranking in the top 2 percent of the nation.

New Thyroid Surgery Development
A Tulane University Medical School chief is pioneering a new form of thyroid surgery--one that leaves no visible scars. Dr. Emad Kandil says conventional thyroid surgery can leave a long scar at the base of the neck, but this procedure is less invasive.

Gretna Ferry Time Changes
New Orleans' Gretna ferry has had its hours of operation changed. Starting today, the ferry will run from 6:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. The ferry will also run Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development spokesperson Dustin Annison says the changes are a continuation of a pilot program in September. A Peaceful End to the 2009 Hurricane Season
A relatively mild Atlantic hurricane season comes to an end today. During the past six months there were just nine named storms with three becoming hurricanes and two of them reaching category three strength or higher. Storm forecasters Phil Klotzbach and William Gray from Colorado State University predicted a below-average year, but even they didn't think it would be this quiet. In addition to an El Nino condition in the Pacific, Klotzbach says a lot of wind shear and dry air suppressed storm development. Klotzbach and Gray will offer their prediction for the 2010 hurricane season early next month.

State Cracks Down on Environmental Pollution
The state Department of Envirnomental Quality announces it's teamed up with State Police and the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to boost investigations of environmental crimes. Jeff Nolan with DEQ's Criminal Investigation Division says the partnerships will add more efficiency to enforcement of the laws. Nolan says the additional resources will benefit investigations that involve circumvention of the state's environmental laws, as well as those involving pollution and hazardous materials.
