How Did New Orleans Area Lawmakers Vote on the Bailout?

(Undated)  --  Only one of Southeast Louisiana's U.S. representatives voted for the economic bailout plan in Congress.  Democrat Charlie Melancon says he had to support the plan, because he couldn't sit back and do nothing.  Fellow Democrat William Jefferson voted no.  He says leading economists in our country cannot agree on whether a bailout of our nation's financial institutions is needed.  Republican Steve Scalise says he worked to defeat the bill because he is pushing an alternative plan that would have the financial sector pay for the bailout, not the taxpayers.

Emergency Chief Fired After Going To Game During Disaster

(Houma, LA)  -- The emergency preparedness director of Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana has been fired over a football game.  Jerry Richard [[ REE-shard ]] lost his job after he went to an LSU football game as Hurricane Ike was flooding his parish.  Parish President Michel Claudet says Richard violated policy by taking his parish-owned SUV to Baton Rouge for the game.

Average Price Of Regular In Louisiana Drops Another Penney

(Baton Rouge, LA)  --  The statewide average price of regular in Louisiana is down another penny today.  Triple-A says regular is now averaging three-64 a gallon compared to three-65 on Monday.  A year ago the average was two-71.  Around the state, the average price of regular is three-62 in Baton Rouge, three-66 in Lafayette and three-63 in New Orleans.

Upwards Of 40 Percent Voter Turnout Predicted In Louisiana On Saturday

(Baton Rouge, LA)  --  Saturday's primary election in Louisiana could well draw upwards of 40 percent of the state's registered voters to the polls.  That prediction came Monday from Secretary of State Jay Dardenne during an address to the Press Club of Baton Rouge.  He indicated the turnout could be highest in East Baton Rouge Parish where the offices of mayor, district attorney, some judgeships, and Metro Council seats will be voted on.  Dardenne said nearly 71-thousand people took part in the seven days of early voting that ended this past Saturday.

Louisiana Economy Stronger than Most

(Baton Rouge, LA)  --  Louisiana's Revenue Estimating Conference meets today.  While the nation's economy struggles, however, Louisiana remains in good shape.  Dr. Jim Richardson is on the panel that determines how much money will flow into state coffers.  He says the recent hurricanes will mean a boost for state revenues.  As people rebuild homes and replace damaged belongings, he is expecting surges in sales tax revenue.  He adds that oil revenues are strong for the state.
