Sheppard Spend Time in Half-way House

Democratic Louisiana State Senator Derrick Shepherd was ordered Monday by a federal judge to spend the night in a half-way house pending a hearing today in U.S. District Court in New Orleans. Federal prosecutors are seeking to have Shepherd's bond revoked following his arrest on felony charges over the weekend for assaulting his former girlfriend. The bond in question relates to his indictment this past April on mail fraud and money laundering charges.

River To Open Up Today

While the cleanup of hundreds of gallons of fuel oil continues along the banks and wetlands of the Mississippi River, the Coast Guard says the waterway should fully reopen to shipping by the end of today. The oil spill occurred early last Wednesday morning when a freighter struck a barge transporting the fuel. So far, less than 75-thousand gallons of more than 400-thousand gallons of oil that spilled into the river have been removed.

Congressmen Debate Issue

Michigan Congressmen from both sides of the aisle took part in a debate Monday on energy issues. Republican Representative Fred Upton and Democratic Congressman Bart Stupak were among a bipartisan group of lawmakers who talked about high gas prices and ending U.S. dependence on foreign oil during the event at Tulane University. This was the third part of the "Congress Debates" series, intended to increase the dialogue on pressing issues.

Gillis Case Scheduled To Go On

The penalty phase of the Sean Vincent Gillis murder trial recessed early Monday afternoon when one of 12 jurors hearing the case became ill. Testimony is scheduled to resume today. Gillis, whom authorities say has confessed to killing eight south Louisiana women, was convicted Friday night in Baton Rouge of the 2004 strangulation of 43-year-old Donna Bennett Johnston. Since Saturday, the prosecution and defense have been presenting testimony to influence the jury's decision on whether the 45-year-old Gillis should be put to death or spend the rest of his life in prison.

Two Arrested After Traffic Stop

After a traffic stop and car search on I-10 in Jefferson Davis Parish, Louisiana State Troopers arrested a female correctional officers from Darrington Penitentiary in Texas. Trooper say they discovered 1.2 pounds of cocaine in a suitcuase in the trunk of the car. Arrested along with LaQuatta Felder was former inmate Joseph Harris. Both were booked for possession with Intent to Distribut Cocaine.
