The state's cash-poor Disaster Unemployment Assistance program--for those forced out of work by hurricanes Gustav and Ike--receives a fresh injection of funds from FEMA. Dept. of Revenue says sales tax collections during October were up from 2007
The state revenue department says, even with the economic downturn nationwide, sales tax collections in Louisiana during October were up from the same month in 2007. Department of Revenue spokesman Byron Henderson says the rise was about two-and-a-half million dollars, for an October 2008 total of 243-point-5 million dollars. He says it's another example of how Louisiana's economy is in better
shape than the national economy. Henderson says the increase is surprising, considering also the fact
that Louisiana suffered two hurricanes during September.
