Durel Letter To Citizens
August 29, 2008
Durel Letter to Citizens of Lafayette and Acadiana
To the Citizens of Lafayette and Acadiana:
As Gustav approaches hurricane force and Louisiana's coast, I feel it important that we stay in communication in any way available to us. So, while it is still quite questionable as to where it will hit, the time has come for us to begin planning for what currently looks like an event that will have a significant impact on our area. We have all "survived" a past hurricane, but we also know that each one is different from any other, so circumstances and results will always change. Another thing that we have to realize is that the world has changed in south Louisiana. We have a higher concentration of people than we had years ago, and this results in much more traffic on our highways. This is why I want to make a few points for you to consider as you make decisions.
1) 1) Once hurricane force winds are upon us, most emergency services cease until it is safe for our first responders to get out. 2) Ambulances do not move when winds reach a sustained force of 50 miles per hour. 3) If electricity is needed to run medical equipment that you or a loved one is required to use, you should consider leaving sooner rather than later. 4) Also, anyone in low lying areas that normally flood in a heavy rain, as well as anyone living in mobile homes, need to begin preparations to leave those areas as soon as you think prudent. And that means before any evacuation discussion even begins...avoid the traffic that we all know is coming. Everyone that stays home through the storm should be able to sustain themselves for at least 7 days without any help, electricity or ability to leave.
Let me point out that your emergency personnel throughout Lafayette are on top of this situation, and we will be providing constant updates. They are well trained professionals who will do all they can to help us get through this storm with the least amount of pain. I simply ask that you don't put them in unnecessary danger by not taking intelligent precautions. Also, take the time to do the little "extra" things that need to get done to insure the safety of you and your family. Check with any neighbors that you know of that may not be as mobile as you are, to see if there is anything you can do to help them make connections with the proper people or authorities.
I ask that we all stay vigilant and stay tuned to the news outlets over this 3-day weekend, as we will be making frequent updates.

Letter to LCG Employees
August 29, 2008
To the Employees of Lafayette Consolidated Government:
Many of you serve in positions critical to the operations of LCG, especially during emergency situations. I thank you for your public service and your dedication. The Labor Day Holiday weekend provides a unique opportunity for many of you to implement your emergency plans "at home" for you and your family. I would ask that you take advantage of the time you have available now to do so. We would likely begin feeling the effects of Gustav late Monday or Tuesday, and many of you may be working at that time, so please, take care of your family needs now.
I have had some inquiries from employees not subject to being called in to work, regarding "civil leave." At the writing of this message (11:00 a.m., Friday, August 29) there are no plans to place employees on "civil leave" prior to Tuesday, September 2. Employees not subject to call are already on holiday leave on Labor Day and there are no plans to change this holiday leave.
If the situation is too dangerous for non-essential personnel to report to work, a "civil leave" declaration would likely be made as early as the beginning of your shift on Tuesday, September 2.
Those employees who are required to work during emergency situations, must maintain direct contact with supervisors following your department's emergency plan, including cell phone, 2-way radio, and email.
LCG will provide notices important to our employees to all of the news media and we will continue to post this information on the LCG website, for those who are able to access the internet. God Bless all of you and your families.
