Budget To Shrink By $49 Million

(Lafayette, LA)  --  The Lafayette City-Parish budget proposed for the next fiscal year is 49-million dollars smaller than the current budget.  City-Parish President Joey Durel says city sales taxes are expected to remain flat and parish sales tax collections are projected to fall two percent.  The budget for 2009-10 is currently set at 587-million dollars, down from the current 636-million.  Durel says various vacant department positions will be eliminated, but no layoffs or pay cuts are expected.  In fact, Durel says he's proposing a two-percent, across-the-board raise for city-parish employees in accordance with pay plans approved last year.
